Gemeente Hilversum – Spatial model of the De Meent neighbourhood

Spatial model of De Meent neighbourhood – Municipality of Hilversum

We were delighted to supply the Municipality of Hilversum with a spatial model of the De Meent neighbourhood. This model provides a clear and tangible overview of the area and is intended as a communication tool for spatial planning and neighbourhood development. The emphasis was on accuracy, recognisability and a professional look and feel that matches the municipality’s vision.

The basis of the project was formed by digital 3D files that we received from the client. The buildings in the neighbourhood had already been designed in SketchUp and delivered as STL files. This provided a solid starting point: the designs were already fully aligned with the municipality’s wishes and met the desired scale and design. Thanks to this preparation, we were able to focus entirely on the technical translation to the physical model and the choice of materials.

For the production of the model, we used PLA, a sustainable and biodegradable material that is ideal for detailed 3D printing. The choice of PLA was in line with the sustainability philosophy of the municipality of Hilversum and guaranteed a sleek, consistent end result. The various components were printed in the correct colours so that the different functions and zones within the neighbourhood are clearly recognisable. These include residential buildings, green structures and infrastructural elements.

Although the client chose to build the model themselves, we provided support during this process in the form of advice and guidance. We contributed ideas on the best way to position, glue and finish the components. We also provided tips for decorating the model, such as the use of vegetation elements, ground cover material and scale figures to enhance the spatial experience. This collaboration ensured that the municipality not only received a technically well-executed model, but also an attractively presented model that invites discussion and interpretation.

The end result is a detailed and representative model that presents the De Meent neighbourhood in a clear and appealing way. The scale accuracy and choice of materials ensure a realistic appearance, while the modular construction offers flexibility for future modifications or expansions. The model now serves as a valuable tool for participation processes, presentations and internal planning discussions within the municipality.

We look back with pride on this collaboration with the municipality of Hilversum. The project illustrates how digital designs from SketchUp and 3D printing technology can seamlessly complement each other to achieve a concrete and tangible result. Thanks to the use of modern production methods, combined with careful advice and an eye for detail, a model has been created that is not only informative but also inspiring.

With this project, we have once again demonstrated that 3D printing of spatial models is not only efficient and accurate, but also contributes to a sustainable and innovative way of presenting within the world of urban development.
