For Vekoma, we had the opportunity to create a unique moving scale model of the Ravenring, a new attraction being built for Efteling. For the presentation of this attraction in London, a miniature version was needed that not only showcased the design and appearance of the carousel, but also brought its movement to life. This project brought together engineering, attention to detail and presentation in one unique scale model.
A miniature that really comes to life
One key aspect was central to the development of this scale model: the carousel had to be able to rotate, just like the full-scale attraction. This made the model much more than a simple scaled-down representation of the design. The moving components allow the attraction’s operation to be presented in a clear and engaging way.
Creating a moving scale model requires a different approach than building a static model. In addition to the visual design, careful consideration must be given to the freedom of movement of the components, the fit between individual parts and the overall construction. All elements must fit together precisely, ensuring that the carousel is not only instantly recognisable, but also functions as a miniature version of the actual attraction.
3D printing as the foundation of the final result
The entire scale model was 3D-printed in white by 3D Printing Limburg. By using 3D printing technology, the individual components could be manufactured with precision and assembled into one cohesive model. This production method offers considerable design freedom when creating complex shapes and makes it possible to turn digital designs into tangible presentation models.
The choice of white printed components also provided a suitable base for the finishing process. After production, Efteling painted the scale model in the correct colours. This allowed the model to be finished with the desired colour scheme and appearance, in keeping with the design of the Ravenring.
A striking presentation in London
The scale model was used during a presentation in London, where the new attraction was showcased. A physical miniature makes it possible to view a design from different angles, giving visitors and stakeholders a more tangible impression of the final result.
Because the carousel can actually rotate, the presentation becomes even more compelling. The movement immediately demonstrates how the attraction comes to life, adding an extra dimension to the overall presentation.
From design to moving presentation model
With the Ravenring, we created a technically and visually distinctive presentation model for Vekoma. The project demonstrates how 3D printing can be used not only to produce highly detailed miniatures, but also to create moving scale models that demonstrate how a design works.
At 3D Printing Limburg, we combine technical expertise with bespoke solutions to turn ideas into tangible models. The Ravenring is a great example of this approach: a unique scale model that brings together engineering, presentation and movement, showcasing Efteling’s new attraction in a truly distinctive way.
