The Indestructible Model: Why PETG Is the Smart Choice for Your Project

In the world of 3D printing, PETG is the powerhouse for 2026. Thanks to extreme impact and heat resistance, this material is the smart choice for traveling models and sunny displays.

What exactly is PETG?

PETG stands for Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol. Chances are you already handle this material every day; it is closely related to the plastic used in PET bottles, but with added glycol. This additive ensures the material is less brittle and more resistant to extreme conditions.

The 3 Superpowers of PETG in model making

Why should you specifically choose a PETG model from 3D Maquettes? This material offers three crucial advantages:

  1. Temperature resistance (The ‘Sun-proof’ guarantee)

A well-known problem with standard 3D prints (such as PLA) is that they can warp when left in direct sunlight for long periods, for example in a estate agent’s window display. PETG has a much higher melting point. A PETG model retains its shape, even during the hottest summer days behind glass.

  1. Extreme impact resistance

Does your model need to be taken to trade fairs, presentations or international meetings on a regular basis? Transport is the biggest enemy of a scale model. PETG is more flexible and tougher than other plastics. Where a resin part might splinter on impact, PETG absorbs the blow. It is the safest choice for ‘travelling’ models.

  1. Chemical and UV resistance

PETG does not yellow under the influence of UV radiation and is resistant to most cleaning products. This makes it ideal for models displayed in public spaces where they need to be dusted regularly.

When do we recommend PETG?

Although we at 3D Maquettes always consider the specific requirements of your design, we often recommend PETG for:

  • Structural base elements: The foundation or internal structure of a large model.
  • Functional components: Moving parts or components that are frequently touched.
  • Outdoor and display models: Anything that will be exposed to direct sunlight or fluctuating temperatures.

Your vision, executed to last

Choosing the right material is a specialist skill. At 3D Maquettes, we combine technical expertise with an eye for aesthetics. Whether we opt for the durability of corn starch (PLA) or the sheer strength of PETG, the end result is always a model that stands as solid as a rock.
