Scale model of a water purification system for Sweco – technical showcase model as a trade fair eye-catcher

On behalf of Sweco Netherlands, 3D Maquettes developed a detailed and functional scale model of a water treatment system, designed as a visual showpiece for the Aqua Nederland trade fair in Gorinchem. The aim of this project was to present a complex technical process – namely the purification of water – in a clear and engaging way to trade fair visitors, potential clients, and collaboration partners.

The model was produced using a combination of techniques, including 3D printing (FDM), precision sawing, laser cutting, and careful manual assembly. This mix of production methods made it possible to achieve both technical accuracy and aesthetic clarity. Each component was crafted with attention to detail, ensuring that the entire system’s operation could be presented in a clear and convincing manner.

To make the water purification process visually understandable, plexiglass tanks in different colours were used. These clearly illustrate the path of polluted water and its transformation into clean water. The colour coding makes the different phases of the purification process instantly visible to viewers – a crucial aspect when explaining technical installations on a trade fair floor.

In addition, miniature figures were added to the model to make the scale of the system immediately tangible. This extra context makes the scale model not only technically accurate but also comprehensible and engaging for a wide audience – from technical specialists to curious visitors.

The final result is a convincing and professional technical presentation model that served as a true eye-catcher at Sweco’s trade fair stand. The model combines technical precision with visual storytelling, making it a perfect example of how 3D scale models can help make complex technical systems understandable to a broader audience.
