Detailed miniature of Lange Jan in Heerlen as a visual tool for an urban heritage project

Commissioned by Oostwegel Special Products, 3D Maquettes produced a detailed and high-quality miniature of Lange Jan, the iconic and striking shaft building that symbolizes Heerlen’s rich mining history. This miniature was used as a powerful and visually persuasive tool in a proposal to the municipal council, with the aim of placing a replica of Lange Jan on a prominent roundabout in the city.

The scale model was designed with great care and attention, with a special focus on authentic details that emphasize the cultural and historical value of the structure. A striking and symbolic feature of the design is the staircase on the side of the building, added with precision and craftsmanship. These stairs were of particular significance to the client, as he owns the highest stair segment of the original shaft building. This unique detail was deliberately incorporated into the miniature, making the scale model not only a visual representation but also a personal and cultural statement.

Although the proposal, supported by this carefully crafted model, provided strong visual justification and clearly communicated the cultural significance of the monument, the municipal council unfortunately decided not to approve the project. As a result, the miniature of Lange Jan was not placed at the intended location.

Nevertheless, the model remains a valuable and unique tribute to Heerlen’s mining past and a tangible reminder of the historical importance of the shaft building. The scale model of Lange Jan is appreciated as a professionally crafted and authentic piece that reflects the pride and heritage of the region.
